When Cavitt pitched the game club to our organization this summer, he sold us on the social benefits, the ability to reach under-served students, and his personal passion. Of course, they don't mind sitting on the beautiful brand-new flooring donated by our friends at AFT flooring. Their Thursday nights are so popular, gamers who come in late are regularly left with no open seats available. Jackson Banberg, another student I interviewed, stressed the upgrade in aesthetics is, "definitely" responsible for the doubling of attendance they've seen in the past month. The kids, under Cavitt's supervision, are drawing up the designs for a student-run escape room now! They've got the manpower the club is bursting at its seams. I could see that same look of limitless possibilities in their eyes, and they're putting it into action. I realized at that moment that big achievements were obtainable even for small-town kids like us. Jeff Durham, one of the students I interviewed, referred back to Cavitt telling the kids his plans saying, “it’s cool to actually see it become a reality.” It reminds me of when I was an MHS student and how big it was for us to win the state championship. It’s not only exciting to see my friend finally accomplish a dream of his, but his students have been impacted by the story too. For anyone that doesn’t know Aaron Cavitt, this game club/shop has been his dream since before he joined us in Mineola. They told me they had never done any renovation work before, but now feel comfortable working with serval power tools and projects like repairing/texturing drywall. I spoke to three club members and MHS students who had been in the club since the very beginning and had all played a part in the renovations. Ricky gave club sponsor, Aaron Cavitt, free reign to make it feel like home and he’s done just that! Aaron estimates that 85% of the renovations were done by the game club members. This summer Ricky Ramirez generously allowed us to start using one of his buildings for the club which had previously been hosted in the MHS lobby. Below are before and after pictures from the Multiclass Game Club headquarters.
